Requirements

To qualify for the Safety Officer Internship, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Educational Qualification: Grade 12.
  • Health & Safety Qualification: Diploma or Degree in Health & Safety.
  • Driver’s License: Code 8/10 driver’s license.
  • Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Legislation Knowledge: Familiarity with the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996 is essential; knowledge of environmental legislation is advantageous.
  • Medical Fitness: Must be able to obtain a valid medical certificate of fitness to work in an opencast mine setting.
  • Residency: Candidates must reside in Limpopo Province, specifically in Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality or Glenover outside Lephalale.

Duties and Responsibilities

Interns will be responsible for:

  • Assisting with day-to-day SHHEQ (Safety, Health, Hygiene, Environment, and Quality) functions.
  • Writing SHE reports and assisting with safety files, induction, training, legal appointments, and competency cards.
  • Reporting to the Manager and Junior SHE Officer within agreed timeframes.
  • Recording, reporting, and investigating incidents and accidents while monitoring action plans for implementing recommendations.
  • Conducting periodic workplace and equipment inspections and audits (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly).
  • Assisting in managing waste management and recycling programs to minimize environmental impact.
  • Conducting toolbox talks.
