The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is inviting applications for a 3-year paid internship in GI Microbiology and Biotechnology.
The position is based at the ARC-Animal Production (ARC-AP) campus in Irene, Pretoria, and is designed for early-career graduates looking to grow professionally in the fields of biotech research, microbiological analysis, and applied agricultural sciences.

What This Internship Involves
As a Research Intern, you will work directly under a project manager and research scientists to support scientific studies, laboratory experiments, and fieldwork in GI microbiology and biotechnology. This role is ideal for graduates looking to gain industry-relevant lab experience, conduct data analysis, and contribute to real-world agricultural innovations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and following technical project plans
- Conducting sample collection, DNA extraction, and ELISA assays
- Adhering to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards
- Capturing and managing scientific data with quality control measures
- Participating in internal research meetings, seminars, and knowledge transfer workshops
- Assisting with procurement of lab materials and compiling technical reports
- Supporting technology transfer through presentations, articles, and posters
- Operating and maintaining lab equipment and research facilities
- Ensuring compliance with safety, health, and environmental regulations (SHE/OHS)
Who Should Apply
You must meet the following criteria to be eligible:
- South African citizen
- Completed BSc Honours in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Genetics, or a closely related discipline OR Hold a BSc or BTech degree in the same fields plus 1 year of relevant work experience
