As a Trainee Train Assistant, you’ll work alongside experienced Train Drivers to ensure safe, efficient, and on-time delivery of freight across the country. You’ll be trained to support various types of train operations including airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, and heavy haulage.

Minimum Requirements
To qualify for this opportunity, applicants must:
- Have a Grade 12 Certificate with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science
- Be at least 21 years old
- Be a minimum of 1.6 metres tall
- Be physically and mentally fit
- Be willing to carry heavy objects
- Pass a Vienna Testing System (VTS) psychomotor assessment
- Pass medical and behavioral risk assessments
- Be willing to undergo annual medical surveillance

What You’ll Do on the Job
You’ll be responsible for:
- Assisting the Train Driver in pre-trip inspections and ensuring locomotives are roadworthy
- Performing shunting operations and coupling wagons
- Supporting the train’s safe operation and movement throughout the route
- Completing train journals and providing accurate feedback to supervisors
- Managing communication equipment and ensuring safe work procedures
- Reporting incidents, delays, or damage during trips
- Assisting with train administration tasks
Training and Certification
If selected, you will:
- Complete a comprehensive theoretical and practical training programme
- Be formally assessed and certified as a Train Assistant
- Undergo ongoing safety and health assessments every 12 months
