What the Role Involves
As a Trainee Yard Official, you’ll:
- Complete a structured theoretical and practical training programme
- Learn to operate yard equipment and perform key rail operations
- Work towards full certification as a qualified Yard Official
- Develop a portfolio of evidence showcasing your learning journey
- Operate under the guidance of experienced Yard Officials
Minimum Requirements
To qualify, you must have:
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- Computer literacy
- Good physical health (you must pass a medical test, including vision and hearing)
- Successful completion of a psychological screening test
- Willingness and ability to work shifts
- Commitment to completing both theoretical and practical training modules
What You’ll Learn
You’ll gain skills and knowledge in:
- Rail yard layouts and shunting operations
- Sectional geography and train services
- Safety procedures, including hazardous materials handling and high-voltage awareness
- Operating within railway legislation (Act 85)
- Communication via radio train order systems
- Conflict handling, stress management, data capturing, and observation
