Transnet is inviting applications for its Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship Programme in Durban. This structured, work-based training programme combines practical, on-the-job learning with formal classroom instruction, giving young South Africans the opportunity to qualify as skilled Diesel Mechanics under the guidance of experienced Artisans.

About the Programme

The apprenticeship provides exposure to both practical workshop activities and theoretical modules taught at accredited training facilities. Apprentices will gain technical competence in repairing, maintaining, and servicing diesel-powered equipment and systems, ensuring readiness to work in the rail and transport industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare work areas, tools, and materials for diesel mechanic tasks.
  • Use hand, power, and measuring tools in maintenance and repair work.
  • Install, assemble, test, and commission mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Maintain and repair diesel engines, control systems, and related assemblies.
  • Apply technical knowledge to ensure equipment runs efficiently and safely.
  • Follow all workplace health and safety standards.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following qualification routes:

  • N2 Subjects: Diesel Trade Theory, Engineering Drawing, Engineering Science, Mathematics (Pure).
  • N3 N6 Subjects: Mechano-technics, Mathematics (Pure), Engineering Science, Engineering Drawing.
  • NCV Level 4: English, Mathematics (Pure), Life Orientation, plus vocational subjects such as Engineering Process, Professional Engineering Practice, Applied Engineering Technology, Automotive Repairs & Maintenance.
  • Technical Grade 12: Mathematics (Pure), Physical Science, Engineering Graphics & Design, Fitting & Machining, Mechanical Technology (Automotive).

Other requirements:

  • Age: 18-35 years old
  • South African citizen
