The City of Cape Town invites qualified and disciplined individuals to apply for the Metro Police and Traffic Learnership Programme 2026, offered under the Corporate Services Directorate.

This highly competitive training programme is designed for young, physically fit, and motivated South Africans who want to serve their communities through law enforcement.

The learnership provides a pathway to obtaining the Further Education and Training Certificate: Road Traffic Law Enforcement and the Law Enforcement Skills Program (SP4/2012).

Participants will undergo intensive classroom and physical training at the Public Safety Training College, gaining valuable experience to start a career in municipal law enforcement.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) qualification (documentary proof required).
  • Be a permanent resident within the City of Cape Town (proof required).
  • Aged between 18 and 35 years old.
  • Medically and physically fit for strenuous training (must be able to pass a fitness test).
  • Proficient in English and at least one other official South African language.
  • No criminal record and no pending criminal cases.
  • Must hold a valid Code B (manual transmission) driver’s licence.
  • Must be unemployed at the start of the programme (7 January 2026).
  • No visible tattoos while wearing the official uniform.

Compulsory Fitness Assessment

Shortlisted candidates will undergo several physical fitness tests, including:

  • 2.4 km run (Males – 12 min | Females – 14 min)
  • 30 push-ups in 60 seconds
  • 30 sit-ups in 60 seconds
  • Dead load carry (100m with 2 x 25kg weights)
  • Tyre drag (20m)
  • 20m shuttle runs (10 shuttles in 60 seconds)
  • 2.1m wall climb
  • Motorcycle reach test
  • Comfort swim (any stroke, unassisted)

Note: Pregnant individuals will not be allowed to participate in physical assessments.

Additional Assessments & Screening

Successful candidates will also be required to:

  • Pass a written assessment and an interview.
  • Undergo medical, drug, and psychological evaluations.
  • Submit fingerprints for criminal record verification.
  • Pass a City driver assessment.
  • Comply with the Public Safety Training College Code of Conduct and training standards.

Training & Conditions of Service

  • Trainees must complete:
    • FET Certificate: Road Traffic Law Enforcement, and
    • Law Enforcement Skills Programme (SP4/2012).
  • The City of Cape Town is not obligated to offer permanent employment after training.
  • Successful trainees must be prepared to:
    • Wear uniform, work shifts, and perform duties in all weather conditions.
    • Be rotated across various departments and locations within the city.
    • Maintain a high level of physical and mental fitness.
    • Undergo ongoing training and psychological assessments as required.
  • Candidates withdrawing or dismissed for disciplinary reasons must refund the City for training costs.

Disqualifying Factors

Applicants will not be considered if they:

  • Have any criminal convictions or pending cases.
  • Were previously dismissed from Local Government for misconduct.
  • Have chronic medical conditions or physical impairments that hinder training.
  • Fail to disclose relevant health information.
