About the Internship Programme

This internship focuses on science based communication and advocacy within the grain sector. Interns support the translation of research, field data, and farmer experiences into clear and accurate communication for farmers, media, policymakers, and the public.

You work closely with Grain SA teams involved in communication, research, farmer development, and policy. The role bridges on farm realities with national discussions on agriculture, food security, sustainability, and markets.

Key Responsibilities

Science Communication and Storytelling

  • Translate technical information related to climate, soil health, plant protection, biotechnology, and production systems into clear written content
  • Draft and edit newsletters, articles, website content, and fact sheets grounded in scientific data
  • Assist with press releases, opinion pieces, and media briefs on agricultural and economic topics
  • Interview farmers, researchers, and experts to gather content for communication materials

Evidence Based Advocacy Support

  • Support policy and research teams by converting research reports and statistics into clear formats
  • Assist with development of policy briefs, infographics, slide decks, and talking points
  • Support clarification and myth correction on topics such as pesticides, fertilisers, biotechnology, water use, and climate impacts
  • Assist with preparation of submissions and background documents for engagements with government, industry partners, and media

Digital and Multimedia Support

  • Support planning, drafting, and scheduling of content for social media platforms
  • Contribute to short videos, animations, and basic data visualisations
  • Assist with website content updates using WordPress
  • Support basic analytics and reporting on audience reach and engagement

Events and Field Engagement

  • Support communication coverage of industry events such as NAMPO, Congress, NAMPO Cape, NAMPO ALFA, and farmer days
  • Assist with preparation of communication materials and visual content
  • Support media centres, briefing packs, and on site content collection
  • Contribute to campaigns highlighting the role of grain farmers in food security and rural economies

Brand, Media, and Stakeholder Support

  • Support consistent messaging and visual identity across science related content
  • Assist with media monitoring and issue tracking
  • Maintain and update media and stakeholder contact lists
  • Support coordination of interviews, farm visits, media visits, and media days

What You Will Learn and Be Exposed To

  • Interaction between science, economics, and policy in the grain sector
  • Practical science communication methods including writing, interviewing, and visual storytelling
  • Advocacy work within a national commodity organisation
  • Field exposure through farm visits, industry events, and farmer engagement
  • Mentorship from communicators, economists, researchers, and farmer leaders

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following or a closely related field.

  • Agricultural Sciences such as Agronomy, Plant Production, Soil Science, or Agricultural Economics
  • Environmental Science or Ecology
  • Food Science
  • Engineering
  • Biological or Life Sciences

Skills and Competencies

  • Demonstrated writing and communication ability through studies or published work
  • Strong computer literacy including Microsoft Office
  • Willingness to learn design and digital tools such as Canva or basic video editing
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Afrikaans
  • Additional South African languages will be an advantage

Advantageous Experience

  • Exposure to student media, science communication, or social media management
  • Familiarity with WordPress or similar content management systems
  • Prior exposure to farming or the grain industry through studies, research, or practical work
