The United States offers an F-1 Student Visa for full-time academic studies. Here’s how to apply:
Step 1: Get Accepted by a SEVP-Approved University
You must be accepted by a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-approved university. The school will send you a Form I-20, which is required for your visa application.
Step 2: Pay the SEVIS Fee
Before applying for a visa, you need to pay the SEVIS I-901 fee (approximately $350).
Step 3: Complete the DS-160 Visa Application
Fill out the DS-160 Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application and print the confirmation page.
Step 4: Schedule a Visa Interview
Book an appointment at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in South Africa.
Step 5: Attend the Visa Interview
At the interview, you must provide:
- A valid passport
- Form I-20 from your university
- Proof of financial support (bank statements, scholarships, or sponsorship letters)
- Proof of ties to South Africa (to show you will return after your studies)
- Visa application fee payment receipt ($185)
If approved, your visa will be stamped in your passport, and you can travel to the USA no earlier than 30 days before your course start date.
