Michaelhouse Teacher Internship Programme 2026: Applications Now Open

Michaelhouse invites aspiring teachers to apply for their Teacher Internship Programme 2026, aimed at equipping the next generation of great South African educators.

As a full-time intern, you’ll be immersed in the full spectrum of life at one of the country’s top boys’ boarding schools from academic instruction and pastoral care to sport, culture, and community service.

This internship is about real teaching in a supportive environment with professional mentorship and personal development.

Location: Balgowan, KwaZulu-Natal
Institution: Michaelhouse (Independent Boys’ Boarding School)
Programme Duration: 1 Year (Fixed-Term Contract)

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Classroom Teaching: Learn through on-the-job training and supervised teaching practice.
  • Pastoral Care: Get involved in life in the boarding house, bus duties, and tutoring.
  • Sport Coaching: Coach school sports throughout the year.
  • Cultural Activities: Join clubs, societies, and chapel initiatives.
  • Community Outreach: Contribute to service and outreach projects.
  • Professional Development: You’ll have a mentor and a clear development plan for your teaching journey.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify, you must:

  • Be 21 years or older
  • Be studying towards a Bachelor of Education (Senior & FET Phase) OR completing another degree with the intention to do a PGCE
  • Be passionate about teaching and committed to professional growth
  • Be willing and able to coach sports, participate in cultural activities, and contribute to school life
  • Align with the school’s Christian values: Integrity, Humility, Compassion, Courage, and Service
  • Have clear criminal clearance
  • Possess strong communication and teamwork skills

Note: Due to the residential nature of the role, preference will be given to male candidates, as interns are accommodated in boys’ boarding houses.
