The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness invites students from the Western Cape to apply for its Health Science Bursaries for the 2026 academic year. This opportunity is aimed at students pursuing careers in critical health professions and is offered based on service delivery needs within the province.

Fields of Study Covered
Applicants must be studying (or planning to study) full-time in one of the following health-related fields:
- Medicine (MBChB)
- Nursing (Bachelor’s, BTech, Higher Certificate R169, Diploma R171, and R174)
- Pharmacy
- Radiography (Diagnostic, Therapy, Ultrasound)
- Physiotherapy
- Occupational Therapy
- Speech Therapy
- Emergency Medical Care (National Diploma)
- Emergency Care Assistant (Higher Certificate)
- Dental Surgery (BSc)
Note: This list may be updated annually depending on the department’s needs.
What the Bursary Covers
The bursary provides funding for:
- Registration fees
- Tuition fees
- Examination fees
Accommodation and travel costs are NOT covered.
Service Obligation
Successful bursary recipients must:
- Sign a full-time bursary contract.
- Complete compulsory community service (if applicable).
- Work back the bursary within the Department of Health OR repay the bursary if the service requirement is not met.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, you must:
- Be a South African citizen.
- Be a resident of the Western Cape.
- Have completed Matric.
- Be accepted or enrolled at a recognised public university or institution.
- Be studying one of the listed qualifications full-time.
- Be dedicated to serving in the health sector.
- Have no criminal record.
