Mining engineering student Opportunities for youth

Specialist roles within South Africa’s mining sector continue to face skills shortages, particularly in technical and safety-related disciplines. In response, Glencore has confirmed funding opportunities through its Glencore Coal South Africa Bursary Programme for 2026, aimed at supporting undergraduate students in selected priority fields.

The bursary applies to studies at recognised and accredited tertiary institutions across South Africa.

Fields Linked to Mining Safety and Operations

Unlike general funding schemes, this bursary is targeted at disciplines closely aligned to mining operations and workforce management. Funding will be awarded to students pursuing undergraduate qualifications in:

  • Industrial Psychology
  • Occupational Hygiene
  • Rock Engineering

These fields play a critical role in mining safety, workforce wellbeing, risk mitigation, and underground stability management.

What the Bursary Covers

The Glencore bursary provides financial assistance covering core academic expenses. This includes registration and tuition fees, prescribed textbooks, meals and accommodation. Where required by the university, financial support may also be provided for the purchase of a personal computer.

Shortlisted candidates will undergo further assessments and interviews as part of the selection process.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have completed Matric and must be entering either their first or second year of undergraduate study in 2026 within one of the listed fields. A minimum achievement of Level 6 in both English and Mathematics is required.

Students must be registered at a recognised South African tertiary institution and must not be receiving funding from another bursary scheme at the time of application.

Application Process and Deadline

Applicants are required to submit certified copies of their South African ID, Matric certificate, and latest academic transcripts where applicable. Incomplete applications may be disqualified.
