MQA IT Internship 2026: Information Technology Graduate Programme

The Mining Qualifications Authority is offering a structured Information Technology Internship Programme for 2026. This opportunity is aimed at unemployed South African graduates who want real workplace exposure in a government SETA environment.

This is a two year internship designed to build practical IT skills while supporting national skills development in the mining and minerals sector.

About the Mining Qualifications Authority

The Mining Qualifications Authority operates under the Department of Higher Education and Training. It is responsible for driving skills development across the mining and minerals sector in South Africa.

The organisation works with industries such as coal, gold, platinum group metals, diamond mining, cement, aggregates, and related services. Through internships and graduate programmes, the MQA helps develop scarce and critical skills needed in the economy.

Internship Overview

This internship is based within the Information Technology Unit and reports to the Senior Manager for Information Technology.

Programme details include:

  • Programme type: Information Technology Internship
  • Duration: 24 months
  • Internship type: Graduate internship
  • Target group: Unemployed graduates with no prior internship experience
  • Citizenship: South African citizens only

What You Will Learn and Do

Interns will gain hands on exposure to enterprise IT systems and daily operational support. The role focuses on both technical and administrative IT functions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting IT infrastructure in a Microsoft Windows environment
  • Assisting with network administration, capacity management, and system security
  • Providing first line IT support through the service desk
  • Setting up new workstations, laptops, and user accounts
  • Troubleshooting software, hardware, printers, and network issues
  • Assisting with cloud systems and Microsoft SQL database administration
  • Supporting IT security processes such as backups, antivirus, and recovery
  • Providing remote IT support to regional offices
  • Installing software and assisting with basic user training
  • Supporting business analysis and coordination of the IMIS or ERP project
  • Assisting with general IT and office administration

This internship moves beyond theory and gives exposure to real systems used in government institutions.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet all the requirements below.

  • Grade 12 or Matric certificate
  • National Diploma or equivalent qualification at NQF Level 6 in Information Technology

An additional advantage:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent NQF Level 7 qualification in Information Technology or a related field

Applicants who have previously participated in an internship programme will not be considered.
