The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is inviting South African students to apply for a Doctoral Studentship for the 2025 academic year.
This opportunity is within the Spectrum Access and Management Innovation (SAMI) research group under the Networked Systems and Applications impact area, focused on Open RAN in 5G Networks and Beyond.

Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and present a research proposal for approval by both CSIR and the university.
- Conduct original research on open RAN in 5G and future networks.
- Produce peer-reviewed publications based on research.
- Compile and defend a Doctoral thesis.
- Contribute to other research group activities (up to 20% of total time).
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:
- Master’s degree in electronic/telecommunication/computer engineering, computer science, or related field.
- Register for a Doctoral qualification at a South African university (in agreement with the CSIR co-supervisor).
- Strong background in computer/telecommunications networks (e.g., 4G and 5G).
- Knowledge of digital signal processing, pattern recognition, machine learning, and AI.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Matlab, Octave, Python, Java, C++, and Linux.
- Experience in software development for experimentation and computer simulations.
- Good communication and teamwork skills, with a strong peer-reviewed publication record considered advantageous.
