Available Positions Under the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) – School Assistant Jobs 2025

The Department of Basic Education is hiring unemployed youth across South Africa as part of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI). Applicants will be placed in one of 8 positions based on their level of qualifications.
The main aim of this initiative is to place young people in two types of job categories at public schools:
- Education Assistants
- General School Assistants
Let’s break down what these jobs entail.
1. Education Assistant Roles (Matric Required)
If you have a matric certificate, you qualify to apply for jobs under the Education Assistant category. These roles are mainly focused on learning support, technology, reading, and psychosocial care. Here are your options:
Curriculum Assistants
You will help teachers prepare lessons, worksheets, and classroom materials. You may also support learners during classes and help manage class routines.
Reading Champions
You will work with learners to improve reading and literacy. Your job will involve reading aloud, helping learners pronounce words, and supporting reading clubs or reading corners.
e-Cadres
In this role, you will assist with digital technology in the classroom. You’ll help the teachers use devices like tablets, projectors, and laptops. Basic computer knowledge is important for this position.
Care and Support Assistants
You will provide emotional and social support to learners. You may even find yourself listening to learners, helping with school safety routines, and working with Life Orientation teachers.
Laboratory Assistants
This position is for schools that have science labs. You will help prepare experiments, clean lab equipment, and assist learners during practical activities.
Workshop Assistants
You will be assist in technical subjects like woodwork, mechanics, or electrical work. This includes preparing materials, keeping the workshop clean, and helping learners during practical tasks.
2. General School Assistant Roles (No Matric Needed)
These jobs are open to all young people, even if you don’t have matric. They focus on helping with school maintenance, sports, and extra activities.
Handymen/Women
You will do basic maintenance work around the school. This includes fixing doors, cleaning school grounds, painting walls, and helping with repairs.
Sports and Enrichment Assistants
In this role, you will be helping with sports, music, drama, and cultural programs. You may lead physical education activities and assist in organising school events.

If you’re selected, you’ll be working in schools from June until the end of the contract.
Monthly Pay
- You will earn R4,000 per month
- This amount is before a small UIF deduction and includes R30 monthly data
Who Can Apply?
This program is only for unemployed youth aged 18–34. You must not be studying full-time or currently working.
