Amazon Development Centre South Africa, in collaboration with StudyTrust, is offering a life-changing bursary for high-potential students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. This bursary not only covers your academic expenses but also includes a paid internship at Amazon, paving the way to a full-time career in software development.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for this opportunity, you must:

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Be enrolled at a South African university
  • Be entering the final year of a 3-year degree OR third year of a 4-year degree in 2026
  • Plan to study Honours (NQF Level 8) in 2027
  • Not be pursuing or registered for a Master’s degree
  • Have achieved a minimum average of 65%
  • Be passionate about software development and the Amazon work culture
  • Be available to start full-time work with Amazon in January 2028, if offered a position

If you’re still in your second year or haven’t started university yet, now’s the time to prepare. These top institutions offer degrees that qualify:

  • University of Cape Town (UCT) – BSc in Computer Science
  • University of Pretoria (UP) – BEng Computer Engineering
  • Wits University – BSc in Data Science
  • Stellenbosch University – BSc in Mathematical and Computer Sciences
  • UNISA – Bachelor’s degrees in IT and Informatics (ideal for working students)

What Does the Bursary Cover?

Amazon will cover the following capped costs:

  • Tuition fees
  • University residence or private accommodation
  • Meals and local transport
  • Study materials and textbooks
  • Personal laptop
  • Monthly living allowance

About the Internship

As part of the bursary, you’ll take part in a paid summer internship at Amazon. Here’s what to expect:

  • Hands-on work on real-world tech problems: distributed systems, automation, and cloud security
  • Regular training workshops, mentorship, and networking events
  • Evaluation for a permanent SDE position post-graduation

What Are the Obligations?

  • You must complete the summer internship at Amazon
  • If offered a permanent position, you must be willing to work at Amazon for the same number of years as you received funding
